What is Engineering Design?

I believe engineering design is using a specific step-by-step process to guide one through design, researching and learning more about all aspects of the project including the causes, stakeholders and requirements to better inform their decisions, and thinking of divergent ideas then converging to a final design through iteration in an attempt to discover an optimal design based on the objectives, constraints and criteria in consideration.
