My team and I were tasked with helping the Christian Charity organizaton Scott Mission located in downtown Toronto. The main problems that needed improvement were the efficiency of the whole process of receiving goods, and the amount of physical labour required by the workers. After speaking with some administration and workers at Scott Mission, andobserving their current process multiple times, we decided to focus specifcally on the unloading of the truck since we identified it as a bottleneck in the current process and we found it to be the biggest problem area. After brainstorming many ideas and then converging based on the various requirements, we finally selected the automatic carpet idea as the solution to pursue. This project was a great experience because we were able to observe a real world situation and then reframe and rescope it based on how we understood the problem to actually be. Then we had to develop a solution based on real constraints. Also, it needed to be practical enough for use in the real world as we were solving a real problem people face.
